A Collective Memory that Never Happened

I have been continuing my exploration of concept regarding creating communal memories that didn't exist that can then be altered by interacting with the installation.

I set up a cassette recorder and microphone in a small locker bay and asked each individual to share something important. There was so lack of clarity as to where the recorder was, which was the major weakness of the piece. Once recorded, I created a loop on the cassette tape that could then be played, and manipulated.

I am still working out the best way to preface individuals to play and push buttons, without having an explicit sign or instructions.

From this project, I am very interested in doing more projects that combine different interactions onto one physical recording device.

This project was so much fun. I wanted everyone to make an imaginary animal then switch with the person to the right. The second person had to write a story about the animal. The stories were so creative and funny. I want to do this project again with a different group.

I had intended for teamwork to be a required effort of this project/performance. Each group, with it's various participants, were challenged by the time restrictions and guidelines of materials, some following the instructions, some not. I hope that instructions will be followed more thoroughly next time, or that the team's members will think outside of the box, when it comes to freedom of painting or textural utensils used. Overall, I was content with the outcome of this assignment.

In this project I am thinking about connection and tension. I aim to make the participants a little uneasy, but also have a dialog that they might not have in any other circumstances. The strings are not meant to be binding but rather connecting. They hold you in the moment and prevent distractions. The conversations are strangely intimate because what is more intimate than your subconscious? People withdraw or holdback information about themselves everyday because of what other people might think about them. On the other hand, sharing subconscious thoughts people don’t even know what to hold back, let alone what these imaginings even mean. So it makes the individual contemplate exactly how much they trust the other person and think of what would be appropriate to share.
In making this project i was pleasantly surprised by what the visual outcome. I thought it was great that when viewing the project from a distance that one could not see the string (or the connection). It looked like everyone was standing the exact distance away from their partner then everyone else.
I did have a little trouble ending the project, because i forgot to say in the beginning instruction what to do when the percipient is finished. So the ending point could have been a little awkward.
