Syllabus: Intermediate 3-D:
This course will build on the principles learned in SCLP 210 by exploring material and strategies more in-depth to establish stronger root knowledge. The students will focus on three-dimensional practices within contemporary fine arts. These practices include form making through additive and reductive processes along with strategies in installation art. Students will learn to use tools and techniques associated with theses processes. Students will broaden their knowledge of sculptural processes and other art practices through three-dimensional material.

Assignment 1: Float or Fail
Due Sept. 10th

Create an object that will float in Lake Tahoe for a least 30 minutes. Good ideas are usually a combination of ideas. Challenge yourself to be innovative take your first idea and add something to it.

Must be 24" in at least one direction
  • Be creative in design
  • Color and Design should work together
  • Must float for 30 minutes
Assignment 1 (Spring): Slip and Slide

Create an object that will slide on snow. It must slide at least 15 feet. Good ideas are usually a combination of ideas. Challenge yourself to be innovative take your first idea and add something to it.

  • Must be 14" in at least one direction
  • Be creative in design
  • Color and Design should work together
  • Must slide 15 feet

Assignment 2: Multiples as Meaning
Due Oct. 1

 You are to create a mixed-media piece that incorporates multiples.Bring in an object that that we will pull a two-part mold off of. You will then use this mold to make multiples of this item to be used in your sculpture. You must incorporate 15-20 of these cast into your finished piece. Incorporate any medium or process that you know into your piece. Use the skills learned in begging sculpture or any other course to enhance your sculpture.

Think about what it means to use a repeated form or object in a work. How does this relate to art and contemporary culture?

Assignment 3: Inflatables

This assignment is designed to arm students with the ability to expand their understanding of scale.
Create a piece that integrates your current practice with an inflatable element. The inflatable element  must extend at least 6 feet in one direction.
